The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow advisory for Odisha on Sunday, warning of thunderstorms with lightning and strong surface winds between February 23 and 25, 2026. The notice comes as a well-defined low-pressure region remains over the southwest Bay of Bengal, with cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.
According to the IMD’s mid-day bulletin, isolated thunderstorms with lightning and gusty gusts of 30-40 km/h are expected over Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak on February 23 and 24. Light rain or thunderstorms may occur in one or two areas in Sundergarh, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Khordha, Puri, Keonjhar, Jajpur, and Kalahandi, while the rest of the state is expected to remain dry during this period.
On February 25, the IMD predicts isolated thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds over Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, and Cuttack, as well as light rain or thunderstorms in Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Mayurbhanj, Khordha, and Puri. Dry weather is forecast in the remaining areas.
The IMD has asked inhabitants to exercise caution at this time, especially in open spaces, and to stay current on weather advisories. Fishermen are warned not to venture into the sea, while travelers and commuters should be aware of potential interruptions caused by strong gusts and heavy rain.
