Tokyo Olympics: The reigning world champion PV Sindhu beat China’s He Bingjiao to bag a bronze medal in Badminton Singles by Bingjao 21-13, 21-15. Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals. In Rio Olympics, she settled for a silver medal after losing to Spain’s Carolina Marin in the final.
Sindhu becomes only the 2nd Indian after Sushil Kumar to win 2 individual Olympic medals. She is the first woman athlete from the country to do so. Sindhu was also the first Indian badminton player to win a Silver medal at the Olympics. Saina Nehwal became the first Indian to win a badminton medal at the Olympics when she finished with a bronze in Beijing in 2008.
Sindhu won the Commonwealth Games gold in 2018 and followed it up with a historic gold medal at the World Championships in 2019, becoming the first India to do so.
