Former US President Donald Trump has announced his third presidential bid, kicking off the presidential election cycle in 2024.
“To make America great again, I am today announcing my candidacy for President of the United States,” Trump said at an event at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, on Tuesday.
Trump also filed paperwork to run for president shortly before his announcement.
The BBC reported that at the event, a voice over the loudspeaker introduced Trump as “the next president of the United States.”
He began his speech by criticizing his successor, Vice President Joe Biden, and telling supporters that “America’s comeback begins right now.”
The former President praised his four years in office, saying, “In four short years, everyone was doing great… Everyone was thriving like never before.”
He also claimed that when he left office, the country’s economy was quickly recovering from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Now we are a nation in decline,” he said, citing high inflation rates.
Trump also claimed that Biden’s handling of the Ukraine conflict has brought the US to the brink of nuclear war.
“Just today, a missile was sent into Poland, most likely by Russia.” People are going absolutely insane, and they are not happy. “They’re furious,” the former President was quoted as saying by the BBC.
Trump had previously stated that he would make a significant announcement on November 15th.
In October, he told a rally in Texas that he “will probably have to do it again”, while in September at an event in Pennsylvania, the former President said: “I may just have to do it again.”
Just before the November 8 midterm elections, he told a Republican campaign rally in Sioux City, Iowa, that he would “very, very, very probably” be running for the White House again.
