Following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump informed European leaders that he hopes to set up a trilateral summit with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as soon as August 22, according to US media.
In an X post on Saturday, Zelensky stated that he would meet with Trump on Monday in Washington.
According to US online media outlet Axios, Trump also invited the leaders of Europe to attend the White House meeting on Monday.
According to the Xinhua news agency, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Saturday that Zelensky and Trump’s meeting on Monday is anticipated to be followed by a trilateral summit.
The Russian side has not yet made a formal commitment to hold a trilateral meeting.
Earlier, a US newspaper, citing sources, said that after meeting with Putin, the US leader called European leaders and offered to negotiate a peace agreement in which Ukraine would cede the remaining Donbass region to Russia, including areas not yet freed by Russian troops, according to Russian news agency Tass.
According to Tass, in exchange, Kyiv and Europe would receive security assurances and a truce in the remaining portion of Ukraine at the current battlefronts.
Trump and Putin met at the Elmendorf-Richardson military installation in Alaska on August 15.
Their discussions, which included a one-on-one encounter in the American leader’s limousine on the way to the main negotiating location and a follow-up small-group discussion with three members on each side, lasted almost three hours.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff represented the United States, while Kremlin Aide Yury Ushakov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov were part of the Russian group.
Putin told the reporters after the discussions that their main goal was to end the crisis in Ukraine.
Trump called the meeting with Putin “very productive.”
He later summoned Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and other EU leaders.
Following the phone calls and the conference, Trump abandoned his request for a ceasefire and stated that Ukraine and Russia should immediately begin negotiating a definitive peace agreement.
On Monday, Trump and Zelensky are scheduled to meet at the White House.
According to the US leader, a second meeting with Putin will be planned if the negotiations with Zelensky go well.
