In the wake of the historic UK election, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced his party’s defeat on Friday, with the Conservative Party headed for one of its worst-ever losses and the Labour Party led by Keir Starmer speeding to a commanding lead.
The Labour Party will form the next government in the UK Parliament after winning enough seats, according to official findings. In the House of Commons, the Labour Party is thought to hold a majority of 160 seats.
By 5 a.m. on Friday, the party had secured 326 of the 650 seats as the counting went on.
With 23,059 votes, the nation’s first prime minister of British Indian descent easily retained his seat in Richmond and Northallerton in northern England. However, despite serving in office for 14 years, he was unable to improve the situation for his party on a national scale.
As his future as a member of Parliament was being decided, a somber-looking Sunak was joined by his wife Akshata Murty. He also opted to utilize his acceptance speech to acknowledge his party’s setback in obtaining another term in government.
“The Labour Party has won this general election and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” said Sunak, acknowledging the “sobering verdict” handed to his party.
“Today power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides and it is something that should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future,” he said.
There is much to learn and reflect, he said.
Taking responsibility for the defeat he told voters: “I am sorry”.
In contrast, Labour’s Starmer stands poised to take charge at 10 Downing Street as Britain’s new Prime Minister after he also comfortably won his own seat of Holborn and St. Pancras in London.
“The change begins right here. Because this is your democracy, your community and your future. You have voted. It is now time for us to deliver,” said Starmer in his own acceptance speech as he was mobbed by his celebrating supporters.
While the customary election night exit poll forecast 410 seats for the Opposition party, the outlook as the trends and results tally takes shape is pegging it around 405 seats with the Tories down to 154. The Liberal Democrats are also among the big winners of this election, set to bag around 56 members of Parliament.
In the meantime, Labour is winning seats from the Scottish National Party (SNP), which ran on a platform of independence for Scotland.
Nonetheless, a significant development that will shape the conversation is Nigel Farage’s eighth and final effort at becoming an MP, which saw him lead his anti-immigration Reform UK to three Commons seats.
Elected to Parliament in 2015 for the first time at the age of 52, the Labour Party leader has promised to offer the change the country needs.
Ending 14 years of Conservative rule, Starmer’s Labour Party has so far won over 266 seats with the Tories heading towards a historic defeat.
Son of a toolmaker, Starmer faced challenging times right from his childhood which was spent in Surrey’s Oxted. His mother, a nurse who worked for the National Health Service (NHS), battled a rare and severe illness all her life.
“Despite the challenges this presented for Keir, he was hugely influenced by his mother’s courage and determination to live her life despite her illness. It also gave him a deep gratitude for the NHS,” the party said about its leader.
After entering politics and the British Parliament in 2015, Starmer was elected as leader of the Labour Party in April 2020.
