The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine has arrived in Kiev to investigate Russian war crimes in the aftermath of its ongoing invasion.
“The UN Independent International Commission has arrived in Ukraine to investigate the crimes related to Russian aggression,” said Olena Kondratiuk, deputy head of Ukraine’s parliament, in a social media post on Saturday. Erik Mose is the commission’s chairman, and Jasminka Dzumhur and Pablo de Greiff are also members.”
According to Kondratiuk, the Commission was established to record human rights violations, violations of international humanitarian law, and other crimes committed in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, according to Ukrayinska Pravda.
The Commission’s primary objectives are to compile a list of suspects, gather evidence, and prepare relevant materials.
The commission’s members have stated that their task is to conduct an independent investigation into the violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law that occurred in Kiev, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Sumy in late February and early March.
The investigation will be carried out in accordance with international standards.
The commission’s head stated that its members will gather information about war crimes committed in Ukraine and report it to the UN Human Rights Council.
The Commission will also present a report to the United Nations General Assembly during its 77th session.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) stated in a report that it had documented several cases of Russian military forces violating laws of war against civilians in occupied areas of Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Kiev between February 24 and March 14.
Rape, executions, unlawful violence, threats against civilians, and looting civilian property were among the crimes committed.
