In a letter addressed to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, eleven members of the US Congress have called on the Biden administration to suspend future US assistance to Pakistan. The lawmakers emphasize the need for Pakistan to restore constitutional order and conduct free and fair elections before receiving further aid. The letter also requests a legal evaluation, under the “Leahy Laws” and Section 502(b) of the Foreign Assistance Act, to determine if US-origin security assistance contributed to human rights violations in Pakistan.
The lawmakers express particular concern about Pakistan’s move to strengthen blasphemy laws, warning that the proposed changes could intensify persecution against religious minorities. They highlight the passing of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2023, emphasizing its potential misuse against smaller religious groups. The letter points to incidents, such as the desecration of churches and homes of Christians in Jaranwala, following the bill’s passage.
The legislators stress their apprehension about ongoing religious persecution in Pakistan and voice concerns about potential restrictions on freedom of religion and belief if the bill becomes law. The letter urges a reconsideration of security assistance until Pakistan takes substantial steps toward restoring constitutional order and ensuring democratic processes.
