Russian voters started to hit the polls for the 2024 Presidential election in the Far East region, including Kamchatka, Chukotka and other areas at 8 a.m. Friday local time.
Leonid Slutsky of the Liberal Democratic Party, Nikolai Kharitonov of the Russian Communist Party, Vladislav Davankov of the New People Party, and incumbent President Vladimir Putin, an independent, will compete for the top spot.
According to the Xinhua news agency, Russia has set up more than 90,000 polling places that will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time on March 15 and 17.
Due to Russia’s enormous geographic spread over numerous time zones, the Far Eastern regions of Chukotka and Kamchatka will be the first to cast ballots. Kaliningrad polling places are located at the western end of Russia, will be the last to start voting.
About 110 million Russian nationals, including more than 1.8 million who reside abroad, are eligible to vote, according to data made public by the Russian Central Election Commission.
As per the norms of the Russian presidential election, victory is guaranteed to a candidate who obtains over 50% of the votes. The Central Election Commission will announce a second round of voting for the top two candidates in situations where there are more than two and none of them receives 50% of the vote. The winner of the second round of voting will be the candidate who received the most votes.
By no later than March 28, the Russian Central Election Commission will verify the election results, and three days after verification, it will make the results public.
