The number of newly reported monkeypox cases has decreased worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The global health organization said in a statement released on Thursday that there were 21% fewer cases in the week of August 15-21 than the previous week.
The figures had been rising for the previous four weeks.
“This decrease may reflect early indications of a declining case count in the European region, which would need to be confirmed later,” the statement said.
The European Region consists of 53 countries ranging from the European Union to Turkey, Turkmenistan, Russia, and Israel.
However, in North and South America, the figures have continued to rise.
During the week, 5,907 cases were reported worldwide, compared to 7,477 the previous week.
In total, some 41,600 infections and 12 deaths have been reported to the WHO from 96 countries since the beginning of the year.
Presently, the US has the highest number of cases at 15,877.
