Following his historic meeting with Donald Trump at the White House, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday he is prepared to participate in a trilateral conference with the United States and Russia to advance peace efforts and seek a resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He also mentioned that the meeting’s date has not yet been set.
Speaking to reporters, Zelenskyy clarified that no date has been set for a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We confirmed that we are ready for a trilateral meeting, and if Russia proposes a bilateral meeting to the President of the United States, then we will see the result of the bilateral meeting. After that, we can go for a trilateral,” he said. Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine “will never stop on the way to peace” and remains open to “any kind of format, but on the level of leaders.”
Trump’s high-level meetings
This comes after US President Donald Trump met with European leaders and Zelenskyy in private at the White House in quick succession. Trump called Putin shortly after to talk about the next steps in ending the situation in Ukraine, which has been going on for almost four years.
“At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, the two Presidents, plus myself,” he added.
Important outcomes
Following the meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Washington’s commitment to cooperate with European partners in ensuring Ukraine’s security was the most significant result of recent negotiations.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump declared he would proceed with arrangements for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to meet. On Monday, Trump held talks with Zelenskyy, the president of the European Commission, the head of NATO, and the presidents of Britain, Finland, France, Germany, and Italy. He also spoke with Putin over the phone.
The most recent events coincide with European concerns that Trump would coerce Ukraine into making compromises that would benefit Putin. Concerns have intensified following Trump’s summit with the Russian leader in Alaska last week.
