Riding on centuries from KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, and Ravindra Jadeja, India continued to pour on the misery for the West Indies, reaching 448/5 in 128 overs and expanding their lead to a daunting 286 runs at stumps on Day Two at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Friday.
With the West Indies struggling to create breakthroughs, India now has a commanding lead moving into Day Three. India dominated the last session, adding 122 runs in 32 overs, with Jurel scoring his first Test century and Jadeja registering his sixth.
The pair’s 206-run stand for the fifth wicket was the defining moment of the match, and despite Jurel succumbing late in the day, edging a drive to the keeper off Khary Pierre for 125, Jadeja went on to stay unbeaten on 104 and will resume on Day Three partnering Washington Sundar, who is not out on nine.
In the last session, India added 122 runs in 32 overs, with Jurel and Jadeja continuing their attritional yet efficient combination as the lack of wicket-taking options became apparent. The session started slowly, with the West Indies doing little to pick wickets after getting the second new ball, and India not attacking much.
Jadeja broke the boundary drought by driving Justin Greaves for four, followed by Jurel’s drive, pull, and flip off of Pierre and him. Jurel then flicked through midwicket for a boundary from Chase, bringing up his first Test century. Jurel then signaled a shift in gears by hitting Jomel Warrican for three fours and a six before falling for 125 and being Pierre’s maiden Test wicket.
Jadeja, on the other hand, danced down the pitch to heave Warrican for six before going on to score his second century in the previous three Tests, continuing his strong record in the format. With India’s advantage increasing and more batting on the way, including seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, India hold a firm grip on the contest while West Indies face a daunting task to stay afloat.
Brief scores:
West Indies 162 trail India 448/5 in 128 overs (Dhruv Jurel 125, Ravindra Jadeja 104 not out; Roston Chase 2-90, Jayden Seales 1-53) by 286 runs
