IND vs ZIM T20 World Cup Highlights: India seals a 72-run victory, returning to winning ways, on a night when the batting finally connected, scoring 256/4. It was always going to be a little too much for Zimbabwe, whose campaign comes to an end, but not without a spirited 97* from their in-form opener Brian Bennett, who continued a great tournament on an individual level. Arshdeep Singh took three wickets, and Hardik Pandya was named player of the match.
India had a fantastic batting performance, hammering 17 sixes to amass 256/4, the team’s greatest total at a T20 World Cup and second highest ever. The entire batting lineup contributes tremendous scores, beginning at the top with Abhishek Sharma. Cameos from Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav were followed by sensational blitzes from Hardik Pandya (50*) and Tilak Varma (44*) in only 16 deliveries.
India are suddenly in trouble as they attempt to defend their ICC T20 World Cup title at home. After a crushing defeat in Ahmedabad to South Africa, India can no longer afford to make mistakes; they must win, keep winning, and most likely win big.
With Group 1 qualification on the line, India just must get points against Zimbabwe. The Chevrons are a dynamic and talented squad, but they are coming off a tough match against the West Indies, in which they lost 254 runs, destroying all of their momentum from wins over Australia and Sri Lanka in the group round.
Suryakumar Yadav and his squad will be relieved that Zimbabwe does not have that much momentum, but they will also be conscious that they have struggled to incorporate that rhythm into their plans and play. The problems are numerous, particularly with the batting, which has failed to click at all – the opening pair hasn’t lasted more than nine deliveries this tournament, and Tilak Varma’s erratic form at number three has kept India on the back foot throughout the middle overs and into the death.
Changes should be expected as India looks to find a spark for the rest of their campaign. The team may believe they are good enough to win today, but much of the game will be played with the expectation of sending a message to England, South Africa, and New Zealand, who may be feeling blood in the water. India does not want to lose their position as the team to beat in the competition, and they need a performance to remind their opponents of that.
