An earthquake of 5.1 magnitude struck areas of Odisha today. The earthquake’s shocks were felt in Seismic Zone III, which included a few cities in Odisha as well as a few other nearby cities in Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Bihar.
These locations include Khurda (Bhubaneswar), Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Angul, and Sambalpur. The Bay of Bengal was affected by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. Along with the cities of Odisha, there are areas of Digha and Kolkata in West Bengal, Dhanbad in Jharkhand, and Gaya in Bihar. The neighboring country of Bangladesh was also struck by the same earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 91 kilometers in the Bay of Bengal.
The earthquake struck around 6:10 a.m. on Tuesday. Fortunately, no casualties or property losses have been reported as of yet. However, the IMD predicted that a tsunami would occur as a result of the earthquake.
Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata are all in Seismic Zone III, which is classified as intermediate risk. The yellow portions in the diagram represent seismic zone III, which was impacted by the jolting earthquake.
