Moscow/Kiev: Russian forces have attacked Ukrainian armed forces’ firing positions at the Azovstal steel plant in the southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
The Azov Battalion fighters and Ukrainian troops took advantage of the ceasefire at the steel plant, according to Russian news agency RIA Novosti, citing Russian Defence Ministry Spokesman Vadim Astafyev on Tuesday.
According to Xinhua, Astafyev added that artillery and aircraft were being used to destroy the firing positions.
Russian troops were attempting to break into the Azovstal plant from multiple points, according to Mariupol Patrol Police Chief Mykhailo Vershinin, according to the Ukrinform news agency on Tuesday.
“For nearly a day, there was artillery and aviation training… They have now stormed the plant in several locations. We are defending ourselves. Vershinin was quoted as saying, “We are fighting back.”
According to local media, both the Russian and Ukrainian militaries said on Monday that more than 100 people had been evacuated from Mariupol.
