The first trading session of the week was dominated by bears, forcing benchmark indices to close in the red. The S&P BSE Sensex fell 364.91 points, or 0.67 percent, to 54,470, while the NSE Nifty 50 fell 109 points, or 0.67 percent, to 16,301.
The top Sensex gainer was Power Grid, which rose 3.44 percent, followed by HCL Technologies, Bajaj Auto, Infosys, and Maruti Suzuki. On Monday, Reliance Industries was the worst-performing Sensex component, falling 3.97 percent, followed by IndusInd Bank and Nestle India.
Bank Nifty closed 0.91 percent lower, while India VIX surged above 22 levels. Broader markets performed worse than benchmarks, with most midcap and small-cap indices finishing nearly 2% lower.
