The Commonwealth Games of Birmingham 2022 have attracted competitors from 72 nations and territories, matching the record set by the 2002 edition held in Manchester, about a one-and-a-half-hour drive from here. The competitions will begin early on Friday, following a gala opening ceremony on Thursday.
The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will be unique in that, for the first time in a multi-national, multi-discipline sporting event, there will be more events for female competitors than male competitors. Birmingham will host 136 women’s events and 134 men’s events. There will be ten mixed-team competitions.
So far, 61 nations have won medals at the Commonwealth Games, and organizers are hoping that a few more countries will win their first medals in 2022. P.V. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, described the Indian Olympic Association’s decision to name her as India’s flag-bearer at the 22nd Commonwealth Games as “a great honor.” Manpreet Singh, India’s hockey captain, has been named flag bearer alongside star shuttler.
