Sanket Sargar opened the country’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2022 with a silver medal in the men’s 55kg category on Day 2. The 21-year-old appeared to be on track to win gold, but two failed clean and jerk attempts ruined his chances, and he finished second with a total weight of 248kg (113kg 135kg).
Gururaja Poojary then won India’s second medal of the competition. The weightlifter took bronze in the men’s 61 kg finals.
Mirabai Chanu, India’s star weightlifter, will also compete on the second day of the Commonwealth Games as the country strives for more success. Chanu, a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, will look to not only defend her CWG title but also add a third medal at the Games.
Boxer Lovlina Borgohain will also compete later that night (12 AM IST), as she kicks off her campaign on Day 2. The Indian hockey team will face Wales in a difficult Group B game, hoping to build on their 5-0 win over Ghana on Friday. Meanwhile, Srihari Nataraj will compete in the medal race after qualifying for the final last night. His race begins at 1:35 a.m. IST.
