Weightlifters have been the standout performers for India so far at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and the trend continued on day 3 when Achinta Sheuli, 20, broke the Games record by lifting a total of 313kg to win gold in the men’s 73kg category. Sheuli first set a Games record by lifting 140kg and 143kg in the Snatch round. In the clean and jerk round, he lifted 166kg and 170kg to set a Games record for overall weight.
Sheuli, the event’s favorite, heaved 313kg (143kg 170kg) to win gold at NEC Hall on Sunday.
Achinta was a strong contender for bossing the event, and he lived up to those expectations joining Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Mirabai Chanu as India’s three gold medallists so far at the CWG 2022.
Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad, who gave Sheuli a run for her money, finished second in the event. He had a best effort of 303kg (138kg 165kg).
