Sheikh Hasina, PM Bangladesh India visit Updates:
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a four-day visit to India. Darshana Jardosh, Minister of State for Textiles and Railways in New Delhi, greeted her when she arrived on Monday.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also met with Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar in New Delhi. PM Narendra Modi said during a joint press conference with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the sidelines of bilateral talks that trade between the two countries is rapidly increasing. “We have decided to expand cooperation in the information technology, space, and nuclear sectors,” Prime Minister Modi said.
On Tuesday, India and Bangladesh signed a water-sharing agreement as well as six other agreements, including ones on space technology and scientific collaboration, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.
According to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the agreement will benefit southern Assam state in India and the Sylhet region in Bangladesh. However, a much-anticipated agreement on another river remained stalled. Meanwhile, Hasina has announced the Mujib Scholarship for direct descendants of Indian soldiers killed or severely injured during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. She stated that the awards would be presented on Wednesday. The award is named after Hasina’s father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Tuesday that as long as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in power, New Delhi and Dhaka will find a solution to all bilateral issues, including the Teesta River water-sharing dispute.
PM Narendra Modi welcomed his Bangladesh counterpart at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday morning, where she was accorded the ceremonial Guard of Honour. “With friendship, you can solve any problem,” she said of her upcoming talks with Prime Minister Modi. So we always do that.”
