External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss collaboration on the G20, which is led by India.
Jaishankar tweeted after their meeting here on Wednesday that they “exchanged views on working together during India’s G20 Presidency”.
As a result of the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, India was elected President of the G20 group of major industrialised and emerging economies.
The Ukraine-Russia conflict was also discussed, and Jaishankar tweeted that he appreciated Guterres’ perspectives.
Previously, Guterres spoke at the Security Council’s ministerial-level meeting on New Orientation for a Reformed Multilateral System, or NORMS, during which India focused on reforming the Council.
He stated that a majority of UN members want the UN Security Council “reformed to reflect today’s geopolitical realities,” and he pledged his support for the effort.
Jaishankar tweeted that Guterres gave insights on reforms.
He also met with ministers who were in attendance at the Council session.
Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Youth of the United Arab Emirates, spoke at the Council and supported India’s bid for a permanent seat on a reformed Council.
After their meeting, Jaishankar thanked her for her “clear-cut expression of support” for India gaining a permanent seat.
After meeting with Poland’s Foreign Affairs Vice Minister Wojciech Gerwel, he tweeted that they discussed the conflict in Ukraine, which borders Poland, and its implications.
Jaishankar also met with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, with whom he discussed expanding bilateral cooperation, according to a tweet.
