On December 23, the country celebrates National Farmer’s Day, also known as Kisan Diwas, to honor and recognize farmers as the country’s backbone. This day was chosen to commemorate the birth anniversary of Choudhary Charan Singh, India’s fifth Prime Minister. Every year, National Farmer’s Day is observed in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh, where farmers are actively engaged in agriculture.
Farmers work around the clock and year round to ensure people do not starve to death or die of hunger, but they struggle to eat at least two square meals per day. Every year, Farmer’s Day is observed to raise awareness of the contributions farmers make to society and to reward them for their efforts.
NATIONAL FARMER’S DAY HISTORY:
Chaudhary Charan Singh, the Kisan Leader, was president from July 28, 1979 to January 14, 1980. His books on farmers and their problems presented a variety of solutions to improve farmers’ lives across the country. He also instituted several farmer welfare programs. In honor of Charan Singh’s birth anniversary, the government declared Kisan Diwas in 2001.
As the second Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri, gave the farmers the famous slogan, “JAI JAWAN JAI KISAN”, Chaudhary Charan Singh followed it.
