The 15th edition of the Hockey World Cup, christened FIH Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup 2022-23, will begin on January 13 at the Kalinga Stadium in here, with Argentina taking on South Africa.
The hosts, India, will also face Spain on the same day at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Odisha’s Rourkela.
India, particularly Odisha, is hosting the prestigious championship for the second time in a row. Belgium won the 2018 World Cup, with the Netherlands finishing second. Australia, which had previously won the title three times, finished third in 2018.
The 15th edition of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup features 16 teams in total. The teams are divided into four groups, each with four teams. The team that finishes at the top in each group will advance to the quarterfinal and the second and third-placed teams from each group will play in the crossover round. The winner of the crossover round will move to the quarters.
