The FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup championship is set to begin on Friday at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and the newly built Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, Odisha.
The Indian hockey team, led by Harmanpreet Singh, will face Spain in their first Group D game on Friday in Rourkela. The Indian team arrives at the tournament following a reasonably successful 2022 season in which they won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 and their first-ever bronze medal at the FIH Pro League.
India is ranked sixth, and Spain is ranked eighth in the international hockey rankings. This, combined with the advantage of playing on home soil, makes India the favorite in their first outing.
After beginning their campaign against Spain on January 13, the Men in Blue will face England on January 15 and Wales on January 19.
