Coughing occurs when our bodies need to clear mucus, irritants, or foreign substances from our throat and airways. It is a reflex action that aids in the defense of our respiratory system against harmful particles and infections. It happens when something, such as dust or postnasal drip, irritates the throat or lungs. Coughing helps to clear the airways, but it can cause inflammation of the upper airway lining cells. Whatever the cause, here are some methods for relieving coughing:
Honey
Honey is an effective sore throat remedy that may be more effective than some over-the-counter cough medications. Combine 2 teaspoons honey with herbal tea or warm water and lemon. Because of the risk of botulism, infants under the age of 12 months should not be given honey.
Probiotics
Probiotics are microscopic organisms that provide numerous health benefits by balancing the good bacteria in your gut. This can help your immune system, which can help you fight infections. Probiotics have been shown in studies to reduce upper respiratory infections. Supplements, yogurt, miso soup, and kombucha all contain probiotics. Different manufacturers may recommend varying daily doses.
Bromelain
Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapples that may aid in cough suppression as well as sinusitis and allergy-related sinus issues. Three times a day, eat a slice of pineapple or drink 3.5 ounces of fresh pineapple juice. People who take blood thinners or antibiotics such as amoxicillin should avoid bromelain.
Peppermint
Peppermint leaves have anti-inflammatory properties, and peppermint oil can alleviate cold symptoms and soothe coughs. You can inhale peppermint vapors from a steam treatment or drink peppermint tea. Add 7 or 8 drops of peppermint essential oil to boiled water to make a steam treatment, then drape a towel over your head and take deep breaths above the water.
Marshmallow
Marshmallow root is a plant that has been used to treat sore throats and coughs for centuries. It contains mucilage, which coats and soothes the throat. A recent study discovered that the plant’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties can reduce coughing. Marshmallow root, available in tea or capsule form, can help with a cough and sore throat. It is not, however, suitable for children.
