Parul Chaudhary and Jyothi Yarraji won their second medals in the competition, but India could not win any more gold on the last day, taking third place in the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 with a total of 27 medals, including 6 gold medals.
Aside from the 6 gold medals, India won 12 silver and 9 bronze medals in the event, which was contested four years after the 2021 edition in Hangzhou was canceled due to the Covid-19 outbreak, putting in a strong showing a month before the World Athletics Championships.
In terms of gold medals, India ended third, trailing Japan (37 gold, 11 silver, 10 bronze) and China (22 gold, 8 silver, 6 bronze), while Sri Lanka finished fourth with eight medals, three gold, two silver, and three bronze.
With this achievement, India equaled their best-ever medal count at the Asian Athletics Championships, matching the 27 medals won in Bhubaneswar in 2017. India earned nine gold medals at that time.
On Sunday, India earned eight silver medals and four bronze medals, but a gold medal escaped them despite the fact that eight of them came close to winning the yellow metal.
Jyothi Yarraji, a sprinter, was the standout performer for India on the final day of the Asian Athletics Championship 2023 being held to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Asian Athletics Association as he added a silver to the gold she won in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Jyothi ran a superb sprint to take silver in the women’s 200m, clocking a season-best time of 23.13 seconds.
Parul Chaudhary also earned a silver medal in the women’s 5000m race, adding to her gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase. In the five-day tournament held at the National Stadium in Bangkok, Parul clocked 15 minutes 52.35 seconds for silver, while India finished with a double podium finish as Ankita took bronze with a time of 16:03.33.
Another outstanding achievement occurred in the women’s shot put, as India’s Abha Khatua took silver and Manpreet Kaur took bronze. Abha threw the iron ball 18.06 meters, while Manpreet cleared 17 meters.
Manu DP of India also had an excellent performance, taking silver in the men’s javelin throw with a distance of 81.01m.
Swapna Barman of India finished second in the heptathlon with a score of 5840 points, a remarkable result.
Krishna Kumar, a middle distance runner, won silver in the men’s 800m with a season and personal best effort. The SAI Bengaluru camper finished second in 1:45.88.
KM Chanda won her sixth silver medal on Sunday, clocking a season-best 2:2.58 in the women’s 800m.
The men’s 4x400m relay team of Amoj Jacob, Muhammad Ajmal, Mijo Kurian, and Ramesh Rajesh won silver in 3:01.80 seconds, while the women’s 4x400m relay team of Rezoana, Aishwarya, Jyothika, and Subha won bronze in 3:33.73, a season’s best performance.
Gulveer Singh of India won bronze in the men’s 5000m race with a time of 13:48.33, coming third behind two Chinese runners.
