Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur, and Aditi Gopichand Swami of India won gold in the women’s compound team at the World Archery Championships 2023 on Friday. It was India’s first gold medal in archery at the world championships in any category.
In the final, the Indian three defeated the Mexican combination of Dafne Quintero, Ana Sofa Hernandez Jeon, and Andrea Becerra 235-229.
The second-seeded Indian women’s compound team defeated defending champions Colombia 220-216 in the semifinals. After obtaining a bye in the first round, the squad defeated Chinese Taipei and Turkey in the quarterfinals and pre-quarterfinals, respectively.
India had previously won 11 medals at the World Archery Championships, nine silver and two silver.
This was India’s fourth straight world championship gold medal in the compound women’s team, following silvers in 2017 and 2021 and a bronze in 2019. Jyothi Vennam has been a member of each of the four medal-winning teams.
The Indian compound men’s team, which included Abhishek Verma, Ojas Deotale, and Prathamesh Jawkar, lost against the Netherlands 230-235 to exit the quarterfinals.
The USA defeated Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam in the quarterfinals of the mixed compound team event, 154-153.
On Saturday, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur, and Aditi Gopichand Swami will compete in the individual women’s compound quarterfinals, while Ojas Deotale is the only Indian among the top eight in the men’s category.
