India finished the Commonwealth Youth Games on a high note, capturing a silver and two bronze medals in athletics on the last day and ending 17th in the medal table.
On the final day of competition on Thursday, Asha Kiran Barla earned silver in the girls’ 800m, Pooja took bronze in the girls’ high jump, and Arjun finished third in the boys’ javelin throw.
Previously, swimmer Shoan Ganguly took silver in the boys’ 400m individual medley and Sasi Anupriya took bronze in the girls’ shot put on August 7, as the contingent of 12 boys and 12 girls completed with five medals in all.
Asha Kiran Barla finished second in the girls’ 800m in 2 minutes 04.99 seconds, trailing England’s Phoebe Gill, who set a Commonwealth Youth Games record of 2 minutes 02.30 seconds, breaking South Africa’s Caster Semenya’s record of 2:04.23 set at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune. Fleur Cooper of Australia won bronze in 2:05.86.
Arjun from India finished third in the boys’ javelin throw with a distance of 65.94, which he achieved in his first of six attempts. Willem Schalk Jacobus Jansen of South Africa (79.85m) and Tom Rutter of England (67.54m) were the winners.
Pooja finished joint third in the girls’ high jump with a leap of 1.75 meters, tied with Australia’s Izobelle Louison-Roe, Pooja crossed 1.75m in her fifth attempt while Izobelle did that in the fourth. Pooja attempted 1.78m in her sixth jump but failed to cross the bar while the Australian went for 1.81 but could not manage it.
