Antim Panghal of India won a bronze medal and earned her Olympic quota for 2024 Paris in her senior World Championships debut, defeating European champion Jonna Malmgren of Sweden in the 53 kg division here on Thursday.
The two-time U20 world champion was at her best, winning 16-6 on technical superiority (TSU) to earn her first senior World Championships medal.
In the qualifiers, Panghal defeated defending world champion Olivia Dominique Parrish of the United States, followed by her TSU triumph over Roksana Marta Zasina of Poland.
The 19-year-old Haryana girl, who is competing as a neutral athlete because WFI was suspended by the World body, subsequently defeated Russia’s Natalia Malysheva in the quarterfinal before suffering a heartbreaking loss to Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Vanesa Kaladzinskaya of Belarus in semifinal on Wednesday.
