Our bodies begin to exhibit telltale symptoms of kidney problems, signaling that it’s time for us to either get checked out or take control.

KIDNEY PROBLEM: 5 MAJOR WARNING SIGNS OF RENAL DAMAGE

Nocturia, or frequent urination: waking up during the night to go to the bathroom is frequently a first-rate but subtle indicator. Experts define Nocturia in various ways. When someone needs to urinate more than twice a night, we consider it a condition. Therefore, raising awareness and encouraging people to exercise greater caution when they observe a change in their bladder habits are crucial.

Insomnia: Patients with chronic renal disease often experience sleep disturbances, but they either ignore them or mistakenly attribute them to lifestyle modifications.

Day and Night Reversal: The circadian rhythm of sleep and wakefulness is regulated by the hormone melatonin. When these levels are in tiny amounts throughout the day, they rise at night in healthy persons. In renal illness, numerous  studies have proved that the melatonin levels are significantly lower which leads to sleep disorders.

Breathlessness: Kidney illness often manifests with dyspnea, indicating the kidneys’ reduced ability to manage fluids. The transfer of blood volume from the lower extremities to the lungs occurs more frequently while one is lying down, causing discomfort and dyspnea.

Restless Leg Syndrome: Having restless legs syndrome is an overwhelming need to move one’s legs. It all begins with a painful feeling in the legs, usually in the evening or at night (pins and needles, internal itching, or a crawling sensation). Movement either fully or partially relieves it.

Swelling of the Feet: One symptom that prompts a person to visit the doctor is swelling of the feet. Kidney disease-related edema typically gets worse in the evening and  night and subsides by morning. This can be due to various disorders in the kidney including chronic kidney failure or a glomerulonephritis, drug induced kidney diseases which if detected early can sometimes reverse the kidney disease.

To preserve our valuable kidneys, we must dispel the myths around the aforementioned symptoms and continue educating about them.
