PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif is set to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan while PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari is slated to be the President of the country, according to PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) finally came to an agreement late on Tuesday over the formation of a coalition government and who will hold the top positions after days of tense negotiations, according to a report from Geo News.
During a joint press conference, Bilawal announced that Asif Ali Zardari, his father, would take the helm as the nation’s president and Sharif would serve as prime minister.
According to the PPP chairman, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which had partnered with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), lacked the necessary delegates to form the Central administration.
Former prime minister Sharif announced that the two parties will form the center-right administration and congratulated all of their key leaders.
The PPP won 54 seats while the PML-N won 75 seats in the general elections held on February 8. Additionally, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) has promised to provide them its 17 seats of support.
To form the government, a party must hold 133 of the 265 contested seats in the lower house of Parliament, or the 266-member National Assembly.
