World Health Day is celebrated every year on April 7th to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948. The theme for World Health Day 2024 is ‘My Health, My Right.’ The annual event draws attention to rising global health issues and encourages people to live healthier. According to WHO, this theme aims to promote the rights of everyone, everywhere to have access to health services, education and information. Moreover, it also focuses on freedom from discrimination from all sections of society.
It is essential that we put our health first and take preventative measures to protect it as we mark this significant day. Enhancing our immune system is essential for averting illnesses and advancing general health.
WORLD HEALTH DAY 2024: GOLDEN RULES TO BOOST OVERALL HEALTH
- Balanced Diet: Fuel your body with a variety of nutrient-dense foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats. Incorporating a rainbow of colours on your plate ensures you’re getting a variety of vitamins and minerals to support your immune system.
- Maintain a Healthy Weight: Being overweight or underweight can impact your body’s immune system. Strive for a healthy weight through balanced nutrition and physical activity. Exercise not only helps with weight management but also directly supports immune health.
- Avoid Smoking And Limit Alcohol: Smoking harms your immune system, making you more susceptible to infections. Quitting smoking is a powerful step toward better immunity. If you consume alcohol, do so in moderation. Excessive alcohol intake weakens immune defenses.
- Manage Stress: Chronic stress can weaken the body’s immune system and make you more prone to diseases. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, exercises, yoga or spending time in nature. Incorporating relaxation techniques into your daily routine can help lower stress and support immune health.
- Prioritise Sleep: Quality sleep plays an essential role in immune health. At least aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night to allow your body to rest and recharge. To enhance sleep quality, limit bed screentime, create a dark, peaceful sleeping environment and maintain a consistent sleep schedule.
