Monsoon season has already begun and the season brings about many changes in the environment, which influence the barometric pressure. These barometric variations can cause joint tissues to expand, putting direct pressure on your nerves and joints. During the monsoon season, moisture and humidity levels rise dramatically. The rapid change in temperature and dampness in the air might create stiffness in your muscles and joints.
As per Dr. Pramod Bhor, Director of Orthopedics and Robotic Joint Replacement Surgeon, Fortis Hospital, Vashi, about the link between joint pain and monsoon season, he said, “It is essential to eat well-rounded food to safeguard your health, especially joints during monsoon season.” He also advised us on what we should eat and avoid during the monsoon season to avoid joint pain.

Food that contains Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acid helps reduce pain and inflammation in the joints during the monsoon due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Several Indian foods are rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as flaxseed, walnuts, chia seeds, soybean, and broccoli.
Turmeric: Turmeric works wonders in reducing joint-related issues such as joint pain, stiffness, or inflammation during monsoon. Turmeric contains curcumin which has anti-inflammatory properties that help in reducing joint pain. Individuals can regularly add turmeric to their daily meals for better results.

Packaged and processed food: Packaged or processed foods, such as chips and noodles, may appear to be delicious and time-saving, but they have a significant influence on your general health, including joint pain. These packaged foods contain MSG, added sugar, and preservatives to improve their flavor and shelf life. These compounds can directly affect your joints, causing inflammation and pain. To keep your joints healthy throughout the monsoon season, avoid eating junk or processed foods.
Avoid excessive sugar consumption: Sugar, particularly refined sugar, can cause inflammation in the body, signaling underlying health issues such as arthritis and severe joint pain. To manage and prevent joint pain during the monsoon season, avoid or limit your intake of refined sugar and sugar-based goods such as candy, popsicles, and soda. Eating sugar in excessive quantity can also lead to several health complications including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol.
