Indian para-shooter Rubina Francis, won the bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol SH1 final after placing third with a score of 211.1 in Chateauroux on Saturday.
She ended behind Iran’s Sareh Javanmardi and Turkey’s Aysel Ozgan, who won gold and silver, respectively.
Francis started strong and finished second after Stage 1 with 50 points, just.1 behind Sareh, but a drop in her second-stage performance saw her slip out of the podium position.
Despite the great strain on Francis, the 25-year-old para-shooter did not miss a single shot from her 14th to 21st attempts outside the nine-point mark, clawing her way back into contention. She knocked out Turkey’s Aysegul Pehlivanlar in sudden death to seal the fourth spot.
Iran’s Sareh Javanmardi topped the qualification round with a score of 570, ahead of Hungary’s Krisztina David (567-17x) and France’s Gaelle Edon.
Earlier in the day, Swaroop Unhalkar finished 14th in the qualification round of the men’s 10m air rifle standing (SH1) with a score of 613.4, preventing him from making the final.
Francis’ triumph is India’s fourth shooting medal at the 2017 Paralympics, after Avni Lekhara and Mona Agarwal of Rajasthan won gold and bronze medals in the women’s 10m air rifle SH-1, and Manish Narwal won silver in the men’s 10m air pistol SH1 with a score of 234.9. It is the country’s fourth medal at the Paralympics. Para-sprinter Preethi Pal won the bronze medal in the Women’s 100m T35 event.
