Odisha is going to significantly improve eco-friendly public transportation by adding 600 new electric buses to its current fleet of 450 e-buses, Housing & Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra stated today.
He stated that the state needs approximately 1,000 e-buses to accommodate its expanding demand. The state government will acquire 200 of them, while the central government, led by the Prime Minister, would furnish 400.
In the initial phase, 25 e-buses would be deployed in Sambalpur, followed by a gradual rollout in Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Berhampur, and Angul. Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) will operate the services as part of its “Ama Bus” project, which aims to provide safe, economical, and environmentally friendly transportation options.
Odisha has already gained fifth place nationwide in e-bus operations, marking a key milestone in sustainable mobility. Across the country, 14,329 e-buses are in service under flagship projects like PM-E Bus Sewa and PM-E Drive, from which Odisha benefits significantly.
“With the rollout of 600 e-buses, Odisha is taking a decisive step towards greener cities and smarter urban transport,” Mohapatra said.
