Massive protests by Generation Z demonstrators erupted in Kathmandu on Monday in response to charges of government corruption and a recent ban on many major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and Snapchat. Thousands of protesters gathered in Maitighar in Kathmandu to express their dissatisfaction. The situation worsened after protestors broke through the restricted zone and entered the Parliament building. Police replied with water cannons, tear gas, and live bullets. The instability in Nepal has also pushed India to step up security. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has increased monitoring along the India-Nepal border and deployed more troops to guarantee security and alertness.
Ramesh Lekhak, Nepal’s Home Minister, announced his resignation on moral grounds following Monday’s protests, which resulted in the terrible deaths of 18 people, including more than 15 demonstrators from various cities, including Kathmandu. During a meeting with Congress office bearers, Lekhak condemned the loss as “unimaginable” and announced his resignation in response to widespread criticism of the government’s handling of the crisis.
A curfew has been enforced in almost half a dozen cities across Nepal, including the capital, Kathmandu. The cities under curfew are Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Butwal, Pokhara, Itahari, and Damak.
