The second day of the two-match Test series between India and the West Indies began at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, as the home team continued to dominate the visitors. India resumed the innings at 318/2 following Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century and Sai Sudharsan’s 87-run effort, and continued to score at a rapid pace on Day 2, with Shubman Gill scoring his tenth Test hundred.
Earlier in the morning, India resumed batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill in the middle, with the former departing to the pavilion due to a mix-up. The Indian opener was run out after reaching 175 off 258 deliveries, but Shubman Gill steadied the innings and scored his seventh Test century as Indian captain. While he was ably backed by Nitish Kumar Reddy, who promoted him to number five and scored 43 off 54 balls, Gill also formed an important partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, who scored 44 off 79.
West Indies show grit as they end Day 2 at 140/4; trail India by 378 runs
However, after the Windies captain was clean bowled by Dhruv Jurel, India declared the innings, returning to the pavilion with 518/5 and Shubman Gill undefeated on 129. Following that, the visiting team took the guards in the middle, with opening batter John Campbell looking impressive. However, Sai Sudharsan’s quick catch terminated Campbell’s innings. Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze also contributed significantly, but left with 34 and 41 runs, respectively.
As day two came to a close, Shai Hope (31*) looked well in the middle, forming a critical partnership with Tevin Imlach (14*) as West Indies posted 140/4 after 43 overs. On day two, India’s Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets and Kuldeep Yadav took one as the West Indies trail by 378 runs at Stumps.
