The Odisha Government’s School & Mass Education Department announced on Monday that ten schools in the state have been chosen for National Awards under the Swachh Evam Harit Vidyalaya Rating (SHVR) 2025-26, a national initiative aimed at promoting safe, sustainable, and child-friendly educational environments.
The SHVR methodology assesses schools based on essential characteristics such as sanitation and hygiene, access to safe drinking water, greenery and biodiversity, waste management, and the implementation of climate-resilient measures. The initiative pushes educational institutions to develop their Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure while incorporating environmentally responsible practices into regular school operations.
A total of 20 schools in Odisha were nominated for national evaluation, with 10 being shortlisted for national recognition. The schools chosen are Khairbani Ashram School, Hatiasila Primary School, Gobindapur Primary School, Binapani Upper Primary School, Fulkahanlei Nodal High School (Fulkahanlei), Chandrasekhar Dev Government High School (Siko), Sagarpali Government Middle High School, Mahendra Tanaya Ashram School (K. Dinpur), B. M. Pattanaik Government Upper Primary School, and Rabanaju Primary School.
The award recognizes the collaborative efforts of teachers, students, school administration committees, and local communities in promoting sustainable practices on school campuses. Odisha’s achievement in the initiative demonstrates an increasing emphasis on environmental stewardship and climate-resilient education systems.
At the national level, 191 schools from 29 states and union territories have been chosen for the SHVR 2025-26 awards. Each selected institution will receive a Rs 1 lakh cash reward, a certificate of recognition, and the opportunity to participate in a three-day exposure travel to another state to share and learn best practices.
