India scripted a remarkable finale in the para athletics competition at the Commonwealth Games 2026, with Dilip Mahadu Gavit winning gold with a Games Record in the men’s 100m T47, and compatriot Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi taking silver to complete a dominant Indian one-two.
Gavit ran 10.71 seconds, shattering the previous Games record and finishing on top of the podium. Basil followed soon behind with a season-best 10.83 seconds, assuring India won both gold and silver medals in one of the fastest races of the championship.
Gavit joins weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila in the Women’s Shot Put F57, giving India its third gold medal of the competition.
Kevin Santos of England won the bronze medal in 10.85 seconds, just ahead of Australia’s Jaydon Page, who finished fourth in 10.97.
The extraordinary result highlighted India’s emerging supremacy in para athletics, as the two Indian sprinters delivered great performances on the Glasgow track. Gavit’s Games record emphasized his outstanding performance, while Basil’s silver added another key medal to India’s total.
The historic one-two finish is likely to significantly enhance India’s medal tally and cement the country’s status as a para athletics superpower at the Commonwealth Games.
The grand 1-2 in the Men’s 100m T47 increased India’s medal count to 15 in this edition, with three gold, nine silver, and three bronze medals.
Dilip Gavit was born in the small village of Toran Dongari, near Nashik, Maharashtra, from a modest farming family. His life changed dramatically when, between the ages of five and six, he suffered a catastrophic fall from a tree, severely injuring his right arm. Due to a lack of proper medical attention, the injury developed into gangrene, necessitating the amputation of his arm below the elbow. Despite the significant setback, Gavit refused to allow his impairment determine his future, pursuing his passion for running through a career in para-athletics. Practising on the sandy roads of his hamlet, his skill was eventually recognized by coach Vaijnath Kale, who guided him into professional para-athletics.
He had previously won gold in the men’s 400m T47 event at the 2022 Asian Para Games, giving India its historic 100th medal at the Games. He also made the nation proud by reaching the finals of the men’s 400m T47 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
