India-Pakistan Match : Rain at the R Premadasa Stadium in Chennai on Sunday has led to the postponement of the Super Four match between India and Pakistan.
The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) added a reserve day for the match before it began since the weather forecast called for severe rains on Sunday. As things stand, the reserve day will be in effect, suggesting that the game will resume on Monday, with India resuming their 50-over innings at 3pm local time, having reached 147/2 in 24.1 overs.
Under a beautiful sky, captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill smashed 56 and 58, respectively, before falling in rapid succession. Rain interrupted K.L. Rahul and Virat Kohli’s 24-run partnership and put the proceedings on hold at 4:53 pm.
The reduction in overs began at 6:22 p.m., when the match was often delayed for various reasons.
They scheduled a ground inspection for 7:30pm, followed by a second inspection at 8pm, because there were moist areas at the long-on, point, and square leg that needed additional repair.
The ground crew dried the wet spots with sponges and sawdust and brought a combination of three fans put on a wheeled frame to remove moisture from the patches. They scheduled another inspection for 8:30 pm, as there was a cut-off at 10:36 pm for the commencement of a 20-overs pursuit.
Rain returned to ruin their plans, forcing them to replace the covers, with the best-case situation being a 34-over game if the match started at 9pm. The umpires then decided to play the 50-over game on the reserve day.
It means that India will play three games in three days, with their next match against Sri Lanka on September 12. On September 2, the two clubs faced off in a league stage match in Pallekele due to persistent rain.
Brief scores:
India 147/2 in 24.1 overs (Shubman Gill 58, Rohit Sharma 56; Shaheen Shah Afridi 1-37, Shadab Khan 1-45) India-Pakistan
