Parveen Hooda, a World Championship medalist from India, won the final in the women’s 63kg weight division here on Friday to win the country’s first gold medal in the 2022 edition of the Asian Elite Boxing Championship.
Parveen won the final 5-0 by unanimous decision over Kito Mai of Japan. Parveen, who is from the village of Rurki, about 15 kilometers from Rohtak in Haryana, dominated the fight and did not let the Japanese take any liberties.
Parveen, who won gold at the South Asian Games in 2019, also took bronze at the 2022 World Championships in Istanbul earlier this year. She was one of five Indian female boxers to reach the finals of the Asian Elite Boxing Championship.
Her victory came after fellow pugilist Minakshi was defeated 1-4 in the 52kg final by Kinoshita Rinka of Japan.
Other Indians competing in their respective finals include bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), SAweety (81kg), and Alifya Pathan (81+ kg) from the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Shiva Thapa, a five-time Asian Championships medalist, is the only male boxer to reach the final of this prestigious tournament, in which India is assured of 12 medals.
The event will feature 267 boxers from 27 different countries.
