The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, comprised of Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra, and Jatin Paranjape, recommended Chetan Sharma as chairman of the India senior men’s selection committee on Saturday.
The BCCI announced in an official statement that the CAC had shortlisted 11 individuals for personal interviews after receiving 600 applications for the five positions. The CAC has recommended Sharma, Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, and Sridharan Sharath for inclusion on the selection committee based on the interviews.
Sharma, who has 23 Test caps, has been on the previous selection committee since December 2020, when he took over for Sunil Joshi.
He had re-applied for a role in the selection committee when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made an announcement for new applications for a fresh five-member panel on November 18, 2022.
Das, a former India men’s Test opener, was previously the Indian women’s cricket team’s batting coach, while Ankola, an ex-India fast bowler, is the current chief selector of the Mumbai men’s team in domestic cricket.
Banerjee is a former India pacer who now coaches fast bowler Umesh Yadav. Sharath, a Tamil Nadu native, is the current chairman of the Junior Men’s Selection Committee, and it was under his watch that India won the U19 Men’s World Cup in the West Indies in 2022.
The new selection committee’s task will be to select squads for India’s white-ball series against New Zealand, which will take place later this month.
