India is in third place in the World Test Championship standings after losing by 184 runs on Boxing Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, while Australia retains second place.
India’s point percentage (PCT) has decreased from 55.88 to 52.78 following a loss in the fourth Test, whilst Australia’s PCT has risen from 58.89 to 61.46 as they approach a second consecutive appearance in the WTC final following a stunning win on Monday.
The Australians may join South Africa, who qualified for the final after winning the first of two Tests against Pakistan by two wickets on Sunday, if they win any of their remaining three Tests this cycle.
Australia will tour Sri Lanka for two additional Tests next year, so if they tie the series 2-2 with India, they will still be in contention for a spot in the final.
India, on the other hand, can still qualify for the World Test Championship final if they win the final Test of the series against Australia in Sydney, tying the Border-Gavaskar series, and then hope that the Aussies do not win a Test during their series in Sri Lanka, which begins next month.
The Boxing Day Test has come to a thrilling conclusion, with Australia winning by 184 runs over India in the final hour of the day. The final Indian wicket fell with less than 14 overs remaining in the day, with Nathan Lyon removing Mohammed Siraj, sending the MCG crowd of over 74,000 into raptures as an epic duel between the two archrivals concluded.
With their victory at the MCG, Australia now leads India 2-1 in the five-match Border-Gavaskar series, and they can reclaim the trophy by avoiding defeat in the fifth and final Test in Sydney, which begins on January 3.
