Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed “deep concern” over reports of riots in Brazil on Monday, saying that India will provide all assistance to authorities.
“Deeply concerned about the news of rioting and vandalism against the State institutions in Brasilia. Democratic traditions must be respected by everyone. We extend our full support to the Brazilian authorities,” PM Modi said in a tweet.
Supporters of far-right leader and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, refusing to accept his election defeat.
This occurred a week after the inauguration of his leftist rival, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, according to the Associated Press.
Demonstrators smashed windows, climbed on roofs, and smashed security barricades in all three buildings. Over the weekend, they were all mostly empty.
After several hours, authorities took control of the buildings on Brasilia’s vast Three Powers Square. According to Justice Minister Flavio Dino, approximately 200 people have been arrested.
