Lakshya Sen advanced to the men’s singles final of the Canada Open 2023 badminton event after defeating Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in straight games 21-17, 21-14 in the semifinals.
The conditions in Calgary were challenging, but Sen handled them admirably to reach his first summit clash of the year. He last competed in a Commonwealth Games final in Birmingham in August 2022.
This is Lakshya’s second participation in the final of the BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament, and on Sunday night, the world no. 19 Indian will face reigning All England champion Li Shi Feng of China.
Sen’s previous best performance this season was a third-place finish in the Thailand Open, but now he has the chance to win the Canada Open.
P.V. Sindhu, however, was defeated in her women’s singles semifinal match against world number one Akane Yamaguchi on Saturday night.
Sindhu, who is presently ranked 15th, was defeated in straight games by scores of 14-21, 15-21. Sindhu’s defeat against Yamaguchi was her second in a row, following her loss in the first round of the Singapore Open.
Sindhu, 28, is going through a slump and hasn’t won a trophy since returning from an injury layoff in January. Her latest title came in August 2022 at the Commonwealth Games, where she suffered an ankle injury that sidelined her for six months.
She finished runner-up at the Madrid Spain Masters and third at the Malaysia Masters.
