PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen of India advanced to the semifinals of the Canada Open 2023 BWF Super 500 event after scoring contrasting wins in their respective women’s and men’s singles quarterfinals.
Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist and previous world champion, advanced to the semifinals by defeating China’s world No. 45 Gao Fang Jie 21-13, 21-7 on Friday night.
The Indian shuttler reached the final of the Spain Masters BWF Super 500 tournament in April but has yet to win a trophy this year. In the semifinals, Sindhu will face her rival and reigning world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan.
No. 15 in the world Sindhu has a 14-10 head-to-head advantage with world No. 1 Yamaguchi, but was upset by the Japanese shuttler in the opening round of the Singapore Open last month.
World No. 19 Lakshya Sen, on the other hand, defeated Belgium’s world No. 62 Julien Carraggi 21-8, 17-21, 21-10 to go to his second semifinal of 2023.
Sen, the defending Commonwealth Games men’s singles winner, will face world No.11 Kenta Nishimoto of Japan in the final. Lakshya and Kenta have met twice, with each winning one match.
Sen, 21, has competed in 12 tournaments this year but has yet to reach a final.
