On Day 8 of the Commonwealth Games 2022, Indian wrestlers delivered memorable performances to win three gold medals, one silver, and two bronze medals for the country. Deepak Punia, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik won gold, Anshu Malik took silver, and Divya Kakran-Mohit Grewal added bronze to India’s tally.
With the six medals won on Day 8, India has jumped two places in the medal tally for the Commonwealth Games 2022, passing Scotland and South Africa in fifth place.
Australia continues to lead the medal count with 50 gold medals and a total of 140 medals, England is second with 131 medals, Canada is third with 67 medals, and New Zealand is fourth having 41 medals.
India won 26 medals in total at CWG 2022, including nine gold, eight silver, and nine bronze.
Many more medals are expected to be awarded, as the Indian Men’s Lawn Ball Fours team advanced to the final, defeating England and ensuring a medal. In other news, India’s boxers have secured a slew of medals after reaching the semifinals in their respective weight classes.
On Friday, Rio Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik won her first Commonwealth Games gold medal, while Bajrang Punia successfully defended his gold medal in the Men’s 65 kg wrestling, and Deepak Punia overshadowed veteran Pakistani wrestler Muhammad Inam to win his first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Anshu Malik finished second in her weight category but won silver, and Divya Kakran-Mohit Grewal finished third in their respective events.
The Indian Women’s Hockey team was eliminated in a controversial semifinal, and India’s star paddler Manika Batra was eliminated in a quarterfinal.
Fans can expect plenty more medals on Day 9, as the Women’s cricket team will hope to advance to the final after facing England in the semifinals, and the Men’s hockey team will also face South Africa.
