Fortunately, numerous home treatments can help relieve symptoms and hasten healing.

Home Remedies For Cold, Cough and Congestion in Winter

  1. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam is the got-to remedy for relieving nasal congestion. The warmth and moisture help soothe inflamed mucous membranes, making it easier to breathe. Research shows that steam inhalation can improve nasal airflow and reduce congestion.
  2. Saltwater Gargle: Gargling with warm salt water can help ease throat discomfort and reduce swelling. Studies indicate that saltwater gargles can effectively decrease throat irritation and help clear mucus. Mix about half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle several times a day to soothe your throat and reduce congestion.
  3. Honey and Lemon: Both honey and lemon are known for their soothing properties. Honey has antimicrobial effects and can help suppress coughs, while lemon is rich in vitamin C, which supports the immune system
  4. Vitamin C Diet: Focus on red peppers, vitamin C rich fruits, green leafy veggies, broccoli etc to boost immunity.
  5. Ginger Tea: Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and can help alleviate coughing and congestion. A study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that ginger has expectorant properties, which can help clear mucus from the airways.
  6. Humidifier Use: Dry winter air can exacerbate congestion and respiratory issues. Using a humidifier in your home adds moisture to the air, which can soothe irritated nasal passages and reduce congestion. Research indicates that maintaining optimal humidity levels can improve respiratory function and comfort. Ensure to keep the humidifier clean to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria.

Coughing and colds are typical during the winter. If your symptoms persist or worsen, you should see a doctor for a more thorough evaluation and treatment. Embrace these natural ways to help you breathe easier this winter, but keep in mind that they are not a substitute for medical guidance.
