Over the last 11 days, approximately 124 international passengers have tested positive for COVID-19 after being screened upon arrival in India, according to official sources.
Officials said that between December 23 and January 3, 19, 227 passengers arriving in India from other countries were screened at airports, seaports, and land ports, with 124 of them testing positive.
According to sources, these passengers were infected with 11 different sub-variants of Omicron.
With the recent increase in cases in some countries, the country is on high alert, and the focus has shifted back to Covid-appropriate behavior such as wearing masks and maintaining physical distance.
India implemented random testing at airports last month to detect any potential new variants. Furthermore, passengers arriving in India from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand are being mandatorily required to provide Covid negative reports.
Last month, a nationwide mock drill was held at hospitals and health care facilities, with Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya visiting Safdarjung Hospital in the national capital to review Covid readiness.
On December 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also presided over a high-level meeting to assess the country’s Covid situation as well as the readiness of the health infrastructure.
For several days now, the number of cases in India has remained relatively low, at less than 200 per day.
