According to recent research from Mass General Brigham, adding a daily multivitamin to your routine may help you avoid cognitive decline by as much as two years.
Researchers at Mass General Brigham conducted the COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS), which examined the effects of multivitamin supplements and cocoa extract in a large-scale, countrywide randomised experiment.
This is an important discovery since, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), cognitive decline is a major predictor of diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, which affect 55 million people worldwide.
Addressing the concerns of older adults, lead author Chirag Vyas said, “Cognitive decline is among the top health concerns for most older adults, and a daily supplement of multivitamins has the potential as an appealing and accessible approach to slow cognitive ageing.”
The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, highlighted the positive impact of a daily multivitamin containing 20 essential nutrients.
According to senior author Dr Olivia Okereke, this regimen “helps prevent memory loss and slow down cognitive ageing.”
The study evaluated 573 participants over a two-year period, and the results showed that those taking the multivitamin significantly outperformed a placebo group in terms of learning, memory retention, and information recall.
Significant improvements were noted in orientation, attention, language fluency, and general cognitive function, which effectively postponed ageing by as much as two years.
Howard Sesso of Brigham and Women’s Hospital expressed excitement about the results and emphasized the need to investigate the mechanisms underlying the possibility that a daily multivitamin could prevent memory loss and cognitive decline.
He stated that in order to fully comprehend this fascinating finding, attention must be paid to nutritional status and other aspects of aging.
