Rishabh Pant continued his excellent form in the rescheduled 5th Test, scoring a solid fifty in the second innings against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Pant reached his goal of fifty deliveries in 76 deliveries on Day 4 morning.
Rishabh Pant set a new record for the most runs scored by a visiting wicketkeeper in a Test match. The India vice-captain broke Clyde Walcott’s record for the West Indies against England at Lord’s in 1950. In the aforementioned Test, Walcott had scored 14 and 168 not out.
Pant broke the record when he reached 36 in the second innings on Day 4 morning. Pant has resumed on his overnight score of 30 not out, following a 50-run stand with stand-in opener Cheteshwar Pujara.
Pant also surpassed MS Dhoni’s 151-run haul in the Birmingham Test against England in 2011. In a losing cause, the former India captain scored 77 and 74 not out in two innings.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant became the second Indian wicketkeeper batter to score a century and a fifty in the same Test, following Farokh Engineer. In 1973, Engineer hit 121 and 66 against England in Mumbai.
Rishabh Pant was the star of India’s batting display in the first innings, tearing into the England attack with 146 off 111 balls. Pant’s 222-run stand with fellow centurion Ravindra Jadeja helped India recover from 98 for 5 as India posted 416 runs in the first innings.
Even after losing Cheteshwar Pujara for 66 and Shreyas Iyer for 19, Pant continued in the first session on Day 4.
